Being a dad is one of the greatest blessings and joys in life. But where does a new – biological and adoptive – father start?
Unfortunately, there’s no manual for new dads. Consequently, new fathers will be tempted with–and at times succumb to–believing some lies. Once the initial rush of excitement fades and reality kicks in, new fathers will feel disoriented, confused, exhausted, or worse, they will feel like there’s something wrong with them. We're reviewing three lies that keep new dads stuck and what to believe and do instead. This post will cover the third lie and the corresponding third truth. Lie #3: I cannot be weak as a new father. If I show that I’m weak and struggling as a new father, what will others–especially my spouse/mother of my children–think of me? I don’t want others to think that I’m incapable. I don’t want to be ashamed for not knowing what to do as a new father. I need to show the world that I know what I’m doing–or at least pretend to know. Truth #3: You can be a strong father and be vulnerable tooGenerally speaking, men have a harder time managing and expressing their emotions. You may have seen your father or closest father figure sweep things under the rug or bottled up his emotions. Over time, this created distress, tension, conflict, bitterness, resentment, and possibly led to unhealthy expressions of anger. You’re different. You’re part of a new generation of fathers who want to be transformative. You can forge a new path forward. You can BUILD new habits of authenticity with others over time. Practice makes it permanent. Take Action
As a biological and adoptive father, I have believed this lie too. This lie kept me stuck for a long time.
I built the Transformative Fatherhood Framework–Heal, Grow, and Build–to help new fathers (biological and adoptive) to overcome their unique challenges and move forward with clarity, confidence, and compassion.
