This Sunday's Mother's Day

As a Latino-American, I grew up in a close-knit, traditional family unit.

In general, Latino families are communal, loyal, celebratory, and very relational.

Unfortunately, due to various factors such as betrayal, unforgiveness, and isolation, my family of origin didn't celebrate holidays or special occasions growing up.

This was formative for me. De-formative.

Till this day, celebrating anything takes work for me.

But this is no excuse for me today. While my past has influenced me, it doesn't define me. The same is true for you.

Fathers, this Sunday is Mother's Day!

We have an opportunity to celebrate and honor our mothers and the mother(s) of our children.

Let's take a moment to see, value, and cherish the mothers in our life. However big or small, let's make an effort to celebrate them. Let's continue to grow in this area.

As with other holidays, Mother's Day can also stir mix feelings.

  • To those who have lost their mothers, I'm sorry. I grieve with you.
  • To those who have broken and complicated relationships with their mothers, I sympathize with you. This is hard.
  • To those who have mother wounds, my heart breaks for you.

Fathers, how will you celebrate Mother's Day? Take time to reflect, grieve, and celebrate as you're able. Take one step forward.

Have a great weekend!
